iPhone X  is a smartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the iPhone X on September 12, 2017, alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park campus. The phone is slated for release on November 3, 2017. This iPhone marks the iPhone's tenth anniversary, with "X" being the symbol for "ten" in Roman numerals.

The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch (diagonal) OLED color-accurate screen that supports DCI-P3 wide color gamut, sRGB, and high dynamic range. This "Super Retina HD Display" has the True Tone technology found on the iPad Pro, which uses six-channel ambient light sensors to adapt the display's white balance to the surrounding ambient light. It has a typical contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, a typical maximum brightness of 625 cd/m2, (or nits), and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.

The iPhone X has two color options, Silver and Space Gray.[15] The front and back of the phone are composed of surgical-grade stainless steel to improve durability. The back has a glass slab over the aluminum to enable wireless charging. The design is intended to be IP67 water and dust resistant.[16]

The iPhone X contains the Apple's A11 Bionic SoC, which is a hexa-core processor using the 10nm process. It has the Neural Engine, which is the AI accelerator. It has two cores optimized for performance which are 25 percent faster than the A10 Fusion along with four efficiency-optimized cores which are 70 percent faster than the iPhone 7.[17][18]

Face ID replaces the Touch ID system. The facial recognition sensor consists of two parts: a "Romeo" module that projects more than 30,000 infrared dots onto the user's face, and a "Juliet" module that reads the pattern.[19] The pattern is sent to the secure enclave in the A11 Bionic chip (which contains a dedicated AI accelerator) to confirm a match with the phone's owner's face. The system will not work with eyes closed, preventing access if unattended.[20][21]

The iPhone X has two cameras on the rear, including a 12 megapixel wide-angle camera with a six-element lens, IR filter, autofocus, f/1.8 aperture, digital image stabilization, and optical image stabilization. It can capture in burst, HDR, Live Photo, and panorama modes. It can also record 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 fps and 1080p video at 30 or 60 fps with cinematic video stabilization. It can also record slow-motion video (1080p or 720p at 120 or 240 fps) and timelapses with stabilization. The telephoto lens has 2× optical zoom / 10× digital zoom with an aperture of f/2.4 and optical image stabilization. It can capture in Portrait Mode and Portrait Lighting (in beta). It also has a quad-LED "True Tone" flash with 2× better light uniformity.

On the front of the phone, a 7-megapixel TrueDepth front camera has a f/2.2 aperture. It can capture in burst mode, it has an exposure control, face detection, auto-HDR, auto image stabilization, Retina flash, 1080p HD video recording, and it now enables Portrait Mode (blurred background or bokeh), Portrait Lighting (beta) and Animoji (animated emojis).

It also supports Qi-standard wireless charging, and Apple's own charging mat called AirPower.

Software

The iPhone X will launch with a tweaked version of iOS 11.1 to use the different screen layout.[22]

The home button, which made its debut on the original iPhone, has been removed from iPhone X and most of its functions replaced with gestures, as on the home button-less Nokia N9, BlackBerry Z10, and WebOS devices. Some features like Siri and Apple Pay can be invoked using the side button.
